where progress begins

Better Behavior. Brighter Futures.

BARC helps shelter dogs in Athens County build confidence, trust, and lifelong skills through positive reinforcement.

In addition to working directly with the Athens County Dog Shelter, BARC partners with Friends of the Shelter Dogs (FOSD) to provide full-circle care. Together, we make sure every dog receives both behavioral support and medical attention on their way to a forever home.

BARC also collaborates with community organizations such as My Sister’s Place (and its My Sister’s Paws program) and HAPCAP, offering guidance for pet programs like the new Sunset Motel project—Athens County’s first homeless shelter designed to keep people and their pets together.

Our philosphy

Science Meets Compassion

We believe learning should feel good. That’s why every session is built on positive reinforcement—rewarding desired behaviors and helping dogs make confident, safe choices. Control, choice, and kindness drive everything we do.

METHODOLOGY

What We Do

BARC applies the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help dogs learn new skills, gain confidence, and find lasting homes. ABA is the study of how behavior changes through interactions with the environment—rooted in positive reinforcement and guided by evidence.

In practice, that means we focus on what works for each individual dog. Every training plan is designed around a “study of one,” recognizing that each learner’s motivation, environment, and pace are unique. We use real-time feedback to shape behavior—catching positive moments as they happen, reinforcing them, and gradually building new skills that lead to lasting change.

Our approach strengthens three key qualities in every learner: confidence, choice-making, and autonomy. When dogs experience a sense of control and clear communication, they learn willingly and thrive emotionally.

BARC works closely with the Athens County Dog Shelter and Friends of the Shelter Dogs (FOSD) to create a full circle of behavioral and medical support. Together, we help reduce stress, improve adoptability, and give every dog the best chance at a better life.

Our Team

Melanie Yoder, Executive Director

Melanie is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with more than 15 years of experience supporting students with autism and other developmental needs across public schools, private programs, and clinical settings. Her work in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) began at The Ohio State University’s Chimpanzee Center, where she assisted in teaching trials focused on reinforcement and communication.

Over time, her passion for behavior science found a new direction working with animals. Inspired by the rescue dogs she’s cared for, each with unique behavioral and medical needs, Melanie brings her expertise full circle: using the science of learning to improve the lives of shelter dogs and their future families. She also serves as a Board Member for Friends of the Shelter Dogs, bringing her behavioral expertise to support shelter animals and the people who care for them.

Nikki Balderson, Trainer

Nikki has spent more than 25 years working with animals, beginning as a teenager walking neighborhood dogs and pet sitting for friends. Her career grew from there—managing boarding kennels, learning group play and training methods, and immersing herself in the fundamentals of canine behavior.

In Austin, Texas, Nikki built her own training service, helping countless dogs and their owners strengthen trust and understanding. After moving to Athens, Ohio, she began volunteering with the local dog shelter and soon connected with BARC, where her experience quickly became an invaluable asset. She now serves as a Board Member for Friends of the Shelter Dogs, continuing to turn her lifelong passion into lasting change for animals in need
